Drawing on my experiences as both a teacher and student, my approach to teaching is based on three beliefs.  First, I believe that students learn best through ‘experiences.’  That is, learning is best accomplished as an active endeavor in which students engage with each other, the instructor, the material, and ‘outside’ world.  Second, learning should be challenging.  On the one hand, it should motivate students to push themselves to improve their critical thinking, writing, and speaking abilities.  On the other hand, it should challenge students’ assumptions and understandings of the world around them.  Third, while learning is not a form of entertainment, it should be stimulating.  Reading, participating in class, and doing class assignments should be that students look forward to.
